Why We Convened

Millions of Americans continue to face barriers to accessing affordable, nutritious food while community grocery retailers struggle with rising costs, limited capital, and fragile supply chains. The Grocery Retail for All Summit was convened to bring together leaders from across sectors to identify practical, scalable solutions already working in communities across the country.

Oasis Fresh Market

Oasis Fresh Market is redefining what a modern, independent grocer can be by combining technology, community impact, and scalable store formats to serve historically underserved communities. They operate as “hope dealers” in neighborhoods often defined as food deserts, restoring access, dignity, and opportunity through fresh, affordable food.

Source: The Mildred Store

The Mildred Store is the only full-service grocery within 30 miles of Mildred, Kansas, serving a rural community with high rates of food insecurity. Beyond providing groceries, it serves as a community hub through local events and supports regional agriculture by sourcing directly from area FFA students, farmers, and ranchers.

Kanbe's operates at the intersection of food waste reduction and food access: rescuing surplus produce from wholesalers and redistributing it as affordable inventory before it spoils. This food redirection model lowers cost of goods for store owners while diverting hundreds of thousands of pounds from the waste stream annually.

Voices from the Summit

“The opposite of a food desert was never a food bank. It's a feast in every neighborhood at a price anybody can pay.”

— Mike Lee, Principal Futurist, The Future Market

The future of grocery retail in our communities will not be defined by a single model. It will be defined by a diversity of solutions.

— Ambassador Ertharin Cousin, CEO & Managing Director, FSFI

“Our role in this journey is to listen, to bring resources to the table, and let communities decide how they want to see that live.”

— Eli Moraru, Co-Founder & President, The Community Grocer

❋ Grocery Retail Policy Report

We blend guided moments, open exploration, and space to reflect—so the experience feels both focused and fluid.

Over the coming months, FSFI will highlight each recipient of the 2026 Grocery Retail Resilience & Innovation Awards, showcasing the innovative models, community partnerships, and practical solutions that are strengthening grocery retail across the country.

❋ Award Winner Spotlight Series

Building on Summit conversations, FSFI and Planet Harvest are launching a pilot program to test innovative procurement and distribution models that help independent grocery operators reduce purchasing barriers, improve supply chain efficiency, and increase access to nutritious foods.

❋ Planet Harvest Pilot

The Summit Outcomes Report will capture the key insights, recommendations, and opportunities that emerged throughout the day, providing a resource for policymakers, grocery operators, funders, researchers, and community leaders committed to advancing practical solutions for food access.

❋ Summit Outcomes Report

FSFI is building on the connections made at the Summit by fostering regional partnerships and cross-sector collaboration. Through initiatives such as the Grocery Retail Executive Corps (GREC) and engagement with food policy councils and other partners, we aim to strengthen networks that advance practical solutions for grocery retail and food access.

❋ Regional Partnerships

Building stronger grocery retail starts with collaboration.

Whether you're a grocery operator, policymaker, investor, healthcare leader, researcher, or community organization, we invite you to join us as we continue advancing practical solutions for affordable, nutritious food in every neighborhood.
