Meet the 2026 Grand Prize Winner

When Oasis Fresh Market opened its doors in North Tulsa, it did more than introduce a new grocery store—it restored access to affordable, nutritious food in a community that had gone more than 14 years without a full-service grocery retailer. Located near the historic Black Wall Street district, Oasis also became the first minority-owned grocery store in North Tulsa in more than six decades, demonstrating how community-rooted retail can drive both economic revitalization and improved food access.

Serving predominantly low- to moderate-income households, including many families who rely on SNAP and WIC, Oasis was created to address the longstanding challenges facing neighborhoods where traditional grocery models have struggled to succeed. Its approach recognizes that grocery stores can be more than places to purchase food—they can serve as anchors for healthier, more resilient communities.

Through its nonprofit partner, The Oasis Projects, the organization has expanded its impact far beyond grocery retail. In addition to providing affordable, nutritious food, Oasis offers emergency food assistance, health screenings, rental assistance, financial literacy education, workforce development, youth engagement programs, and enrollment support for nutrition assistance programs. In 2025 alone, Oasis recorded more than 93,000 community engagements, including over 53,000 SNAP interactions, 19,000 eWIC engagements, 11,000 health program touchpoints, and 2,700 summer feeding interactions.

Innovation is central to Oasis Fresh Market's model. The organization was the first grocery retailer in Tulsa to implement the Double Up Oklahoma produce incentive program and the first retailer in Oklahoma to launch ADD Milk, expanding access to nutritious foods while helping families stretch their food budgets. These initiatives demonstrate how federal nutrition programs can be integrated into the customer experience to improve affordability and health outcomes.

Oasis is also redefining how independent grocery retail can scale. This year, the organization is expanding from one store to four locations across Tulsa through multiple retail formats, including a new frictionless micro-store concept designed to reduce operational barriers while increasing convenience and food access. It is also preparing to open the first independently owned grocery store in downtown Tulsa, further demonstrating that innovative community grocery models can succeed in places where conventional approaches have struggled.

For its visionary leadership, measurable community impact, and scalable approach to strengthening grocery retail, Oasis Fresh Market was selected as the $50,000 Grand Prize recipient of the 2026 Grocery Retail Resilience & Innovation Awards. Its work exemplifies the type of innovation the awards were created to recognize: practical, community-centered solutions that improve access to affordable, nutritious food while strengthening the neighborhoods they serve.
